Launching Applications/Using OpenOffice.org (OOo) Writer
You're probably wandering how you do things now that you have gotten Ark installed. This is the section for you.

There exists a menu similar to the Windows Start menu or and the Apple Macintosh menu. It is generally called the Kmenu because it normally has a big K on it (though some distributions change it to some sort of mascot or logo). When you click the Kmenu, it lists several categories of programs, and when you point to one of these categories, it will list the programs in that category. For example, if we wanted to open OpenOffice.org Writer (our default word processor, an equivalent to Microsoft Word), you would click Kmenu -> Office -> OpenOffice.org Writer - Word Processor:
The Application Icons on the Taskbar (Kicker)
You'll notice several icons next to your Kmenu. These are the applications, or programs. These are here by default because they seem to be among the most commonly used programs. You can find out what each icon is by pointing at it. For example, we could point at an icon and figure out that it would be OpenOffice.org Writer:
To launch OpenOffice.org Wrier, simply click it.
OpenOffice.org Splash Screen
Once we click on a program, we will usually (but not always) see what is called a splash screen; that is, a log, animation, or dialog displayed while the program is loading. The following is OpenOffice.orgs splash screen:
The Main OpenOffice.org Writer Window
After the splash screen disappears, we will now see the main window for the program we launched. From there, we can start doing whatever we opened the program for. The following is the main screen for OpenOffice.org Writer:
Typing the Document
Once we are in OpenOffice.org Writer, you may type whatever you want. I decided to type a blurb about Linux (though I spelled Linus Torvald's name as Torvolds):
Saving the Document
There are a couple ways to save a document so that we can come back to it later. The way we will save our document initially is to go up to the File menu and chose Save As...:
Here you can type in any name that you wish to call your new document.
Opening a Saved Document
Once you are ready to resume working on your document, you can enter OpenOffice.org Writer again, click the File menu, and click Open. Next, choose your document and click OK:
From there, I added on to my Linux blurb:
If you would like to save your document with the same name that it already has, you can either click File -> Save or, on your keyboard, press and hold CTRL while you press S (holding them down for a second will save the document).
