Rough drafts

Experienced Linux users

The Ark Linux team is proud to announce the release of Ark Linux 2011.1. This is our first release with both KDE 3.5.x from the Trinity Project and KDE 4.x SC. The highlights of this release include:

  • A new custom init system that is parallelized and less Shell dependent. It has been optimized for as much speed as possible, even on x86 systems.
  • We have switched from RPM4 to RPM5 and have customized our packaging system to include LZMA Compression in all our packages by default. This is to take advantages of all the latest packaging features; this also allows us to fit more onto a single 700MB ISO image, reduces the overall size of packages for faster downloading and allows us to host more packages on our mirrors.
  • With limited support from APT-RPM, we decided to port openSuSE's ZYpper Package Manager to RPM5. They were very helpful and responsive to our questions, so we would like to extend a big thanks to the developers at openSuSE.

Windows users

The Ark Linux team is proud to announce the release of Ark Linux 2011.1. This release has many new features and improvements over previous releases:

  • A faster startup, simply turn on your computer and be doing your work in seconds.
  • The software packages (virtual packages that contain installable software) in our Internet-based software repositories will be smaller so that you can download and install software much faster than before without wasting valuable bandwidth. Also, because our software packages are smaller, we will be able to give you more on one installation CD.
  • Instead of using the complicated apt-get command to install software, you can now use the simple zypper command ('zypper in program_name' rather than 'apt-get install program_name'). And, as usual, we have included a GUI program for installing software to accomodate those uncomfortable with a command line.

KDE-Centric users

The Ark Linux team is proud to announce the release of Ark Linux 2011.1. This release is the first to use a stable version of KDE 4.x SC right off the bat when switching to KDE 4 SC; we will continue to include KDE 3.5.x as is now developed by the Trinity Project. Highlights of this release include:

  • A new custom init system that has been optimize for as much speed as possible for both x86 and x64 users.
  • We have switched from RPM4 to RPM5 to take advantage of the latest package features and have customize RPM5 to include LZMA compression. This makes our packages smaller and therefor faster to download; this also allows us to fit more on a single 700MB ISO CD Image, and to host more packages on our build server.
  • With limited support from APT-RPM, we decided to port openSuSE's ZYpper Package Manager to RPM5. They were very helpful and responsive to our questions, so we would like to extend a big thanks to the developers at openSuSE.

GNOME-Centric users

The Ark Linux team is proud to announce the release of Ark Linux 2011.1. This our first release to use the new KDE 4.x SC, and will still be including KDE 3.5.x as developed by the Trinity Project. Both are easier to use and customize than some other desktops.

For those interested in trying KDE 4.x SC, we think users will enjoy the new and simplified KDE 4 Control Center, the customizable Plasma widgets, and the fanciful eye-candy. Users will also enjoy using the simple Dolphin file manager and the all-purpose Konqueror Web browser/FTP client/SFTP client. We are still including OpenOffice as our default office suite due to it's compatibility with Microsoft Office, but we also have KOffice in our Repositories for people who prefer it's simplicity and ease of use. Other important highlights include:

Developers

The Ark Linux team is proud to announce the release of Ark Linux 2011.1. This release will feature both KDE 3.5.x as developed by the Trinity Project, as well as KDE 4.x SC. We will continue to support Qt3 and Qt4 and to include GTK+ in our repositories, as well as GCC and related libraries and programs for developing, compiling, and testing software. Other important highlights include:

  • A new custom init system that has been optimize for as much speed as possible for both x86 and x64 users.
  • We have switched from RPM4 to RPM5 to take advantage of the latest package features and have customize RPM5 to include LZMA compression. This makes packages smaller and easier to upload and download, and to host online.
  • With limited support from APT-RPM, we decided to port openSuSE's ZYpper Package Manager to RPM5. They were very helpful and responsive to our questions, so we would like to extend a big thanks to the developers at openSuSE.
